Hen party Aarhus

I invited all my female friends in Aarhus for an evening out to celebrate a few things: yes, to mark the fact that I was getting married, the summer holidays are here and some of us won't be in the city over the summer, and also to celebrate the fact that I've met such a nice bunch of people during my first year in Aarhus! I suggested meeting in Løves bog og vin café for drinks and see what happens after that. I have passed by this place many times and never had the chance to pop in. To my surprise, two friends said that they were going to collect me earlier in the day for a surprise, and then we'd meet everyone else at the wine bar. So Nora, Kristina and I drove along on a gorgeous summer's day out of Aarhus - it was great; I love surprises, and I really had no idea what we would be doing. The girls had planned for us to go to Outdoor Xplore to do an afternoon of archery, abseiling and quad biking! It was such a cool idea, and we couldn't have gotten better weather. Martin (from Newcastle, England) was our instructor and we started off with the archery. Kristina, who says she does not play any sports, was like Robin Hood's teacher. She nearly hit the bulls eye on her first go!! Then we headed over to the abseiling wall - we all did the regular one, where you go down backwards. And then the real challenge came - who would do it 'Australian style'? Basically, going down head first. In my head I wanted to do it. But in reality, I knew that they would have to prise me off the wall after I had stopped screaming. So on my second go, I went down backwards again, but it was such a great buzz. Kristina and Nora both walked down frontwards - wow, it looked so cool! For everyone's sake, I'm glad I enjoyed watching them and didn't decide to do it. And lastly, we tried quad biking. As there had been loads of rain the few days before, there were quite a few puddles around, but that's half the fun. Most embarrassing moment? Me crashing after driving 10 meters - I swear I have a driver's licence! What an afternoon - we're all going back next time to do the paint balling :o)

After a quick pit stop at my place (don't think I've ever changed that quickly), we got the bus into town to meet the rest of the girls. It was such a lovely evening - not everyone had met each other before, so it meant that everyone met someone new. I was so touched by everyone's kindness - I was given such lovely presents, and they are exactly what I would have picked myself. I really hadn't expected any presents, so the whole day and evening were such a wonderful surprise! And the presents were given to me in the sweetest old-style picnic basket - perfect for when my family come over to visit next week. Linda also had a little surprise of a devil horns/veil for me to wear. Matched my dress too! Thanks girls for a very memorable hen party in Aarhus, and it was the perfect start to the wedding build-up celebrations....now I'm getting very excited :o)

My first year in Denmark

A year ago today I arrived in Denmark. The year has really flown by, and it is at times like this that I am happy that I started a blog! As the years go by, my memory deteriorates (seriously, but I think Esben could be worse - oh no, what a pair :o) ), so I was able to look back on the posts to see what I have been up to. And even though time seems to have gone quickly, I realise that I've done quite a few things - and I have great memories of my first year too.

Northside Festival #ns12

We went to our first Northside festival last weekend (15/16/17 June) in Aarhus and it was brilliant - just what the doctor ordered. There were three days of bands and the festival had a really cosy (hyggelig!) atmosphere. There were only two stages, so you could listen to every band! It worked out really well - you were never torn between two bands, and you could just relax on your picnic rug and listen to the music! The festival opened with Noah and the Whale (fun group to listen to) and closed with Snow Patrol (one of my favourite bands ever), and once again they didn't disappoint - they got the crowd going, we were jumping with the crowd near to the front and singing....it was just like the old days at a festival :o)

Weather wise it wasn't good on Friday - but Veto helped to lift our spirits in the evening!. But the sun did come out on Saturday and Sunday, and then the wind arrived on Sunday, meaning that they had to take down the huge screens by the stage for a few hours. There was a great mix of bands - from Denmark, the US, Britain, Ireland (SP), Canada, Sweden, France (and more that I have probably forgotten). The toilets were lovely (if you went to the white ones, and not the green ones as I found out later!). I thought the vibe at the festival was really good - everyone was in great spirits, and the location of the festival meant that we could cycle there in 10-15 mins - perfect! Our friend Nora took some photos over the weekend, and there are some included below - til next year #ns13.
P.S. Our purple festival hat made a welcome return to the festival scene.
